Spirits of Eden Spring Playtest Game Invitation

I think this is ahead enough in time that I can give myself time to organize it well. I have to do some journalistic work during spring break as well as studying hard for Economics (if I don’t I fail, I have 2 exams to go, the class drops the lowest grade, but my first exam was a frickin’ D+), but my nights should be pretty free and therefore, I’d like to play for once. However I can’t play as it is my eternal destiny to suffer. Therefore, I thought I’d host instead, because theres a chance in hell somebody will bite. This may be a bit disorganized (a bit?!) as I collect my thoughts.

Life sucks!

Anyway.

WHAT: Some good old D&D 4th Edition adventures set in my Spirits of Eden setting.

WHERE: …On the internet?

WHEN: Next week, preferably Sunday through the next Saturday, with allowances for Wyatt to not show up four times.

(So hopefully we’ll have at least 3 games next week)

HOW: Over Gametable, the only digital tabletop I’ve been able to wrap my head around.

WHO: That’s what we’re going to find out now.

Basically, I’m going to run some games of D&D 4e set in Eden over the next week. The games will be either from 6 PM to 9 PM or from 10 PM to 12:30 PM or so. This is Eastern Time, which is GMT/UTC -5 I believe. Daylight Savings Time is coming up which may screw with the numbers. Time zones and daylight savings time confuse me. I am easily confused.

If you’re interested, read on, and comment, let’s talk a bit, and then post characters and such.

Participants will go to Myth-Weavers or some other site which has 4e hosted sheets that CAN BE READ PUBLICLY, and create some characters for me (please include a character portrait if possible). Create a level 1 character, a level 3 character, a level 6 character, a level 11 character and a level 15 character. There is no guarantee they will all be used, or in sequential order, or that you won’t stick to a single one and level it up over the course of the game. They can be the same character leveled-up to different stages, or entirely different characters. Whatever floats your boat.

We’re working on an honor system here because I can’t possibly read so many sheets and crunch their numbers without going insane or failing all my exams. I will just read your brief backstories and character appearances (which is why a character portrait helps a bit, but I know for things like Athirua, getting a portrait will be difficult, so don’t sweat it if it doesn’t look EXACTLY like your character – it’s just so I can get a gist of things and a mental image going), your class, and basic numbers.

You will then post the link to the character in the comments here, along with the character’s name, age, gender, physical description and a brief backstory, and explanation of the character’s current state (occupation, wealth, whatever). FILL OUT YOUR EMAIL FIELD WITH A REAL EMAIL. This is the only way I can contact you for information, such as the game time. I’ll be using Hamachi for ease.

So, what you need to play:

•Gametable (I know Maptool is better, but I’m not using it!)

-A 64 x 64 character pog such as those generated by Tokentool. You can find images on danbooru or something.

•Hamachi

•Hopefully an email address or even better instant messaging account you use a lot. I am on AIM and MSN, and will email you these relevant contact informations if you’re chosen to play.

What happens if we get a huge amount of people (I doubt it)? I’ll pick random people, they’ll play one or two games, pick more random people, they’ll play 1 or 2 games. Etc. I hope. I think. We’ll figure this out.

Remember that this is an online game, and remember who the guy DMing is. A few things:

•There may be a bit of thick prose at times. If I have to describe a major building sometime, it can either be easy, or may god have mercy on your souls. This game WILL be textual, but hopefully not in a bad way. No I will not video chat. No I will not use Skype. You’re here for the experience aren’t you? If you want to see how I authentically DM a game, it has to be text.

•The adventures won’t have super deep and intriguing storylines that would make James Joyce cry unmanly tears, but you can expect to do some roleplaying. If you are nothing but “Mr. Armor And Sword” I would rather not play with you!

•I haven’t DMed a serious game in a long time. My specialty is satire games. If I say “we’re starting a skill challenge,” please excuse me, don’t freak out. I’m just used to not having to care about this. And so forth.

•I don’t expect that the encounters will be super hard, but don’t get pissed off if they are.

•I’m not a gametable wiz, so if you see random tiles appearing for no reason, I pressed the wrong button.

•My gametable has a habit of wigging out at the worse of times. I apologize for any lag, disconnects or crashes in advance. This is why it’d be good to have you on AIM or MSN so I can quickly reorganize the group after a GM crash.

•I tolerate chat room banter to a point. But try to avoid it, all things considered. If you’re bored, just tell me you are.

•I fudge and while I won’t admit it to you in the game, I admit it now. If a combat is grinding on, I fudge, I admit it. Sometimes nobody is having fun watching the PCs get their asses kicked, not even the DM. So if killing you becomes boring, your character will be saved. You can either hate me for it and cry that I’m an “easy DM” and that I “pull my punches” or you can just play.

•Like I said, I haven’t DMed seriously in a long time. I don’t expect I’ll be able to remember all the rules perfectly or make perfect rulings. I don’t expect to be lightning fast on the uptake, I might ask you for your HP six times during the same fight and forget the initiative count and silly things like that. I don’t expect perfectly balanced encounters with perfectly balanced loot. I don’t want any arguments to break out in the chat, so give me a length of rope here, and do the same for the other players.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not need to use the gametable die roller. We’re working on an honor system through and through. I assume you all have dice at your home, which you are attached to and prefer over crappy chat rollers. It’s faster if you just roll those and tally the numbers for me neatly. I can’t tell when you’re cheating, I’m not psychic, but I trust you won’t cheat at a game like this, it’d just be really petty.

Above all else, we want to have some fun! So please:

•If you’re one of those futzy people who cry about verisimilitude all the time, don’t join.

•If you can’t be fucked to think about things beyond “I use power A”, don’t join.

•If your opinion on the DM isn’t “He’s my friend who’s here to have fun with me” don’t join.

•If you don’t like 4e but “want to give it a try, bleh,” don’t join.

•If you don’t like “flowery asian shit” (to quote a real email I’ve received) and “weeaboo” don’t join.

Character Creation Guidelines:

I allow the 4th Edition PHB, Adventurer’s Vault and any Eden-related material on this blog.

No books other than those two, no online sources other than this blog. We want to keep this simple on my poor brain.

Due to circumstances (More than half the nations not having full write-ups yet) characters must be from the nations of Andaliel, Emderuer or Periterim only. I’m sorry if the other nations sound interesting to you, but they’re just not ready yet.

Character creation as in the PHB, Point buy 22 or Arrays as normal.

You must write at least a 3 sentence, one paragraph, description of your character’s physical appearance, including typical clothing. Sentences can be long as needed obviously, just as long as there’s three and it isn’t super short.

You must write a brief backstory about your character. It likely will not see use, it’s just for grabbing my attention. Include any notes on how this influenced the character’s current personality.

You must write a one-sentence description of your character’s current life situation (employment, home, etc).

Optional: Character portrait

Mandatory: A personalized pog for use in Gametable as your mini.

I may be forgetting stuff in which case we will discuss it in the comments. One thing that will go up here when possible are small teasers for what kind adventure I plan to run. Right now I’m thinking of having a simple wilderness game with a good amount of spirits and maybe a small village, just to get you started on the feel of Eden.

If you’re interested, questions and concerns are welcome now, we need to get a dialog going.

Oh yes! One more thing. Any bloggers who join can feel free to blog about the game if they want (and about how much I suck), because I very likely wont as I’m going to be busy enough that week as it is (life sucks!). You can blog about the game, what you think about the Eden stuff you read, whatever.

I’m hoping I get more than two people for this. I’m shooting for 4 players. I know that’s not 4e standard, but like I said, trying to keep it simpler. Anyway, sound off.
